How to Set Up MetaMask?

I’ll explain how to download and set up the MetaMask browser extensions. However, using MetaMask’s app on your smartphone is similar.

To download the MetaMask wallet, go here.

Once you’ve installed the browser extension, click on “Create new wallet” and create a password. This is a password for MetaMask, not a recovery password or the private keys for your wallet, but a secondary password.

Once you create that, you will get to the security phrase screen where you’ll get the recovery phrase for your wallet. MetaMask gives you some tips on how to keep it safe. For example, writing it down on a piece of paper and storing it in a safe place, memorizing it, or keeping it on an external encrypted hard drive.

You should never tell anyone what’s your recovery phrase or you risk losing your Ether forever.

When everything is set up, you’ll get access to your dashboard. From there, you can easily receive, buy, send, and swap tokens. Furthermore, you can see your ETH balance, which will be zero since you’ve just created the account, as well as your NFT tokens.

If you go to Settings, you can make certain changes to your account. For example, in the General section, you can choose currency conversion and primary currency (ETH or fiat). Furthermore, you can add contacts to send or receive tokens from friends.

How to Add Cryptocurrency to MetaMask?

If you want to add currency to it, click “Buy” and choose the Ethereum token you want to purchase.

Next, choose the amount you want to purchase. There are several payment methods you can choose from, including debit or credit card and bank account.

When you select that, you will get a quote with all the fees. If it looks good to you, go ahead and purchase the tokens. However, keep in mind that you technically don’t have to add cryptocurrency to MetaMask in order to interact with certain apps. However, having it allows you to trade crypto, buy NFTs, play blockchain games, use decentralized exchanges, etc.

How to Send Tokens on MetaMask?

If you want to send cryptocurrency from your MetaMask wallet, you need to click the “Send” button and add the address of the wallet you want to send to in the “Add Recipient” field.

You can also choose the speed for the transaction (slow, average, and fast), which is a cool feature. Naturally, the faster the transaction is, the more expensive it is. If you have the Advanced Gas option enabled in the Settings, you’ll also get an option to set the maximum amount of gas you’re willing to pay for the transaction. Gas is measured in GWEI unit.

MetaMask advises its users to use the Ethereum Gas Station website to give you a ballpark of what you should be spending when it comes to gas fees for transactions.

Another neat feature of MetaMask is the ability to edit transactions. More specifically, you can either cancel or speed up a pending transaction after you have submitted it.

How to Swap Tokens on MetaMask?

Another service MetaMask provides is trading or swapping Ethereum-based tokens. To access this feature, you need to click the “Swap” button located in the main dashboard.

This feature allows you to swap one Ethereum-based token for another. Simply choose the tokens you want to swap to and from, as well as the amount you want to swap. After the recent updates, MetaMask now plugs into the top decentralized exchanges that run on the Ethereum network and gets you the best rates.

If you click on the Advanced Options, you get options for slippage tolerance (1%, 2%, and custom). This is important when you’re using decentralized exchanges with liquidity pools to trade cryptocurrency, rather than a centralized exchange.

When you click on the review swap, MetaMask scans DEXs to get you the best quote. If you’re happy with what you see, click Swap, and your transaction will be completed.

How to Use MetaMask with dApps

Most decentralized applications or dApps will have the option to connect your crypto wallet. This goes for decentralized exchanges, blockchain games, etc. If the desired dApp supports MetaMask, you’ll be able to connect the two. This enables you to interact with that dApp.

When connecting to dApps, make sure that it’s a legitimate decentralized app, as there are many scammers out there.

You can also choose to disconnect a dApp from your MetaMask wallet. To do that, click on the three dots in the upper right corner and click on Connected Sites. You’ll see a list of dApps your account is connected to. To disconnect a dApp, simply click the trash can button next to it.
